Best Bill Splitting Apps in 2026: 5 Options Compared

Which app fits your trip, flat or dinner? Free-plan limits, sign-up rules and exports for five bill splitting apps, side by side.

Best Bill Splitting Apps in 2026: 5 Options Compared

The best bill splitting app is the one your whole group will actually use. In 2026 that question has sharpened: Splitwise now limits how many expenses free users can add each day, and many groups don't want everyone creating accounts for a single weekend away.

We compared five apps on the things that decide whether a group sticks with one: whether people need an account, where it runs, how it handles currencies and settling up, what you can export, and what the free version leaves out.

Choose SplitCost if you want a browser-based bill splitting app nobody has to sign up for; choose Splitwise for long-running households already using it, Splid for international trips with weak signal, and Kittysplit for one-off events.

Product details were checked against each app's website and app-store listing in October 2026. Pricing and limits change, and can differ by country.

How we compared these apps

We used the same ten criteria for every app: account requirement, platforms, split options, settlement suggestions, currency handling, offline use, receipts, export, free-plan limits and paid pricing. We only state a feature when the company's own site or app-store listing confirms it. We didn't score or rank apps numerically — each one is "best" for a different group.

We left out payment apps like Venmo and PayPal. They move money, but they don't keep a running ledger of who paid what across a trip or a month.

1. SplitCost — best when your group won't all sign up or install an app

SplitCost is a web-based expense sharing app. One person creates a group, sets its currency, adds members and shares a link. Everyone else opens the link in a browser and can add what they paid — no account, no download.

What it's good at

  • Zero setup for the group. No account or app install is needed, which matters for the friend who only joins one trip.
  • Flexible splits. Expenses can be split equally, by percentage or by custom amounts, and one expense can have multiple payers — useful when two people split the card payment at dinner.
  • Balances and settlements. SplitCost shows each member's balance and suggests settlements, so the group sees who should pay whom instead of retracing every expense. See how settlement suggestions work.
  • Records you can keep. You can attach receipt images and download expense records as CSV, for example for reimbursements or a trip spreadsheet.
  • Multi-currency groups. Groups can work with different currencies, which helps on international trips.

Example: a weekend trip

Four friends — Aarav, Meera, Kabir and Riya — spend a weekend in Goa and share everything equally.

  • Aarav pays the villa: ₹12,000.
  • Meera pays the airport cab: ₹2,400.
  • Dinner costs ₹3,600; Kabir pays ₹2,000 and Meera pays ₹1,600 (one expense, two payers).

The trip costs ₹18,000, so each share is ₹4,500. Aarav paid ₹12,000 and is owed ₹7,500. Meera paid ₹4,000 and owes ₹500; Kabir paid ₹2,000 and owes ₹2,500; Riya paid nothing and owes ₹4,500. Three payments settle the group: Riya pays Aarav ₹4,500, Kabir pays Aarav ₹2,500 and Meera pays Aarav ₹500.

In SplitCost, the group records the three expenses and reads the balances and suggested settlements instead of doing this maths by hand. Before anyone pays, it's worth a quick check of your expenses before settling up.

Things to know

  • SplitCost runs in the browser, on desktop or phone. We found no native iOS or Android app.
  • It doesn't advertise offline use, so you'll need a connection to add expenses.
  • Because groups are shared by link, anyone with the link can join. Share it only with your group.
  • It's a ledger, not a payment app: you still repay each other by UPI, bank transfer or cash.

Best for: trips, dinners and events where people won't all download an app, and roommates who want receipts and exports without a subscription. See the travel and roommates use cases.

2. Splitwise — best for long-running households already on it

Splitwise is the best-known name in the category, available on the web, iOS and Android. It's account-based: each member signs up and joins the group.

The free plan covers groups, unequal splits and debt simplification, and lets you record expenses in different currencies. Free users now face a daily cap on how many expenses they can add, plus ads. Splitwise doesn't publish the exact cap; its Pro page describes the paid tier as removing limits and ads (Splitwise Pro).

Splitwise Pro adds unlimited daily expenses, currency conversion at current rates, receipt scanning with itemisation, expense search, charts, default group splits, and card-transaction import (US only). On the US App Store, Pro is listed at roughly US$2.99–5.99 a month or US$29.99–39.99 a year, and Splitwise notes prices vary by country (App Store).

Best for: roommates and couples who log a few expenses a week and whose whole group already uses Splitwise. Heavy loggers on a trip may hit the free cap. If you're weighing a switch, see our SplitCost vs Splitwise comparison.

3. Splid — best for international trips with patchy internet

Splid is an iOS and Android app built by an independent developer in Munich. It needs no sign-up and works offline; you can turn on sync to share a group and enter expenses together.

Its standout is currency handling: more than 150 currencies, with amounts converted automatically. It also suggests the minimum number of payments to settle up. Core splitting is free; in-app purchases unlock more groups and Excel export, according to its App Store listing.

Best for: trips abroad where mobile data is unreliable and expenses come in several currencies. The trade-off is that everyone who adds expenses needs the app — there's no browser version.

4. Kittysplit — best for one-off events and bigger groups

Kittysplit, from Berlin, has run since 2012. Like SplitCost, it works in a browser and sign-up is optional; iOS and Android apps exist for those who want them.

The free version has no expense limit and includes settlements, sharing by link and CSV export, for groups of up to nine people. Groups of ten or more, multiple currencies and receipt uploads need a "Super Kitty" upgrade: about €3, paid once per group by one person. Data is hosted in the EU.

Best for: a stag do, wedding weekend or club trip with ten-plus people, where one small one-time payment beats asking everyone to subscribe.

Also consider: Tricount

Tricount, owned by the Dutch bank bunq, is free with no premium tier. Its newer app dropped some former Premium features, including exporting tricounts (Tricount). bunq account holders can add card payments as expenses automatically. It's a solid free choice if you don't need exports.

How to choose the right bill splitting app

  • Who has to sign up? If one reluctant friend won't create an account, pick SplitCost, Splid or Kittysplit.
  • Where will people use it? Browser-based apps (SplitCost, Kittysplit) work on any device. App-only tools (Splid) mean everyone installs something.
  • How do you split? If bills are rarely equal, check for percentage and custom splits, and for multiple payers on one expense. See equal vs. unequal expense splitting.
  • How many expenses will you log? A busy trip can mean 20+ entries a day. Splitwise's free cap bites here; SplitCost, Splid and Kittysplit don't advertise a daily limit.
  • Currencies? Recording a foreign amount isn't the same as converting it. Splid converts free; Splitwise and Kittysplit charge for conversion.
  • Offline? Only Splid clearly advertises it.
  • Records? For reimbursements or taxes, look for CSV or Excel export. SplitCost and Kittysplit include it; Splid charges for Excel; Tricount's current app dropped it.
  • Cost model: a subscription per user (Splitwise Pro), a one-time fee per group (Kittysplit) or per user (Splid), or nothing paid (SplitCost, Tricount).
  • Privacy: read where data is stored and who can see a group. Link-based groups are convenient, so keep the link inside the group.

Which app fits your situation?

The bottom line

Choose by your group's habits: whether everyone will sign up, how many expenses you'll log, which currencies you'll use and whether you'll be offline. If you want a split expenses app that the whole group can open from a link, with receipts and exports included, try SplitCost on your next trip or shared bill.
