Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information SplitCost uses to run shared expense groups, how that data is stored, and what choices you have. We aim to collect only the information needed to help groups track expenses, balances, and settlements.

1. Information We Collect

SplitCost collects the information required to create and manage shared expense groups:

  • Group names, member names, and currency preferences
  • Expense entries such as descriptions, amounts, payers, participants, notes, and any receipt images you attach
  • Technical data such as IP addresses, used to keep the service secure and prevent abuse, and analytics data that helps us improve performance and usability
  • A history of changes in each group, such as when expenses, settlements, and members were added, edited, or removed

2. How We Store Your Data

Group and expense data is stored on secure third-party infrastructure so shared group links work across devices and sessions. So the app can open and work without internet, a copy of your groups and of the pages you visit is also kept in your browser's storage on your device. Groups you create and changes you make while offline stay only on that device until they sync. You can remove this copy at any time by clearing your browser's data for this site. We use reasonable technical safeguards to protect data in transit and at rest, but no internet-based system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

3. Third-Party Services

We may use third-party services that support the product, such as:

  • Analytics (Google Analytics)
  • Hosting, database, file storage, and live-update infrastructure providers
  • Email and support tooling when you contact us
  • Security and rate-limiting services that process IP addresses to prevent abuse

These providers may process limited technical or usage data on our behalf as described in their own privacy policies.

4. Cookies

SplitCost may use cookies, browser storage, or similar technologies for analytics, session continuity, offline access, and product functionality. You can manage many of these preferences through your browser settings.

5. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Request access to the data associated with your use of the service
  • Delete expense data that you control
  • Limit analytics through browser controls or privacy tools

6. Policy Updates

We may update this Privacy Policy when the product, legal requirements, or data practices change. Continued use of the service after an update means the revised policy applies.
